Dear Readers,

The time has come for me to say goodbye to both you and this blog, at least for now.  As many of you know this has been a completely volunteer effort with the goal being to encourage librarians from everywhere to travel and work beyond their borders.  I spent fourteen years of my life doing just that and it enriched and expanded me both personally and professionally. While I still completely believe in this mission, it is time for me to focus on other goals in my life, although I am not yet clear exactly what will be next…

This blog will continue to be hosted and available as searching the archives can be useful when researching potential positions. I will also continue to update my book: How to Become a Traveling Librarian as well as the Book Resources page.

I´m a librarian in Colombia and I enjoy following your informative and useful blog “The traveling librarian”.

I work at Invemar a public/non profit organization which conducts scientific research on marine and coastal ecosystems here in Colombia.

I’m writing to ask if you can help us via your blog in finding a volunteer to assist us in late November (27th – 30th) where we will be offering an international course on digital repositories. The primary responsibility of this person would be to do real time Spanish/English translations during the course.

A strong command of both languages is important and we would prefer someone with either library or records management education.

We would like to host the volunteer (lodging and meals) for one week, preferably if he/she could arrive 3-4 days ahead of the start date to prepare. It could be a great experience and a wonderful chance to enjoy Santa Marta and Colombian Caribbean Coast.

Desde el año 2000 los repositorios digitales se han convertido en el principal apoyo al movimiento de
acceso abierto. Con los años, los repositorios de digitales (e-repositories) han madurado para ser una
herramienta no sólo para el acceso abierto a literatura de investigación, sino como una herramienta
para administrar y hacer más accesibles los activos multimedia de las instituciones mientras que al
mismo tiempo proveen la organización con un mecanismo de reporte de información para la

The school

Our partners are non for profit schools in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, the country’s southernmost state and the one with the largest Indian population. Rich in biological and anthropological diversity, with colonial towns, indian villages and Mayan ruins, the region has the largest tropical rainforest in Mexico. The school is located in the capital, Tuxtla, a growing and thriving city of 500,000 with all typical amenities. The school, which is expanding, aspires to become a leader in high quality education in the region, and has deepening commitments to STEAM+Green, progressive instruction, experiential education and project based learning. An existing and thriving PYP IB program will soon be expanded to the Upper School.

We are recruiting candidates with background in EFL, ELA, Literacy or Library studies to head our small library and assist us in its expansion and growth. IB experience, either as a student or teaching IB, is greatly valued. Classes are small, about 20-25 students, with 50 students per grade level. A 4 acre suburban campus, with ample green spaces, 4 academic buildings, an all purpose auditorium, a sky hydroponic garden, and nice soccer, running and multipurpose fields. Sarah P’s comments:  The key to finding a good volunteer opp is to make sure you do your research. The Canadian Alliance for Development Initiatives and Projects (CADIP) is a non-profit Canadian organization dedicated to promoting peace, cooperation, tolerance, and understanding in multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and international surroundings. They offer affordable (their words) short term volunteer projects. CADIP opportunities are listed regularly on Idealist so I decided to do a check-in e-mail which is one of the tools I use to check volunteer opportunities.  If they reply, I take this as a positive. Is this case, they did and I have included their e-mail below.

I can recommend the projects: Teaching and promoting the library in Yeviepe, Togo (www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-togo) and Managing a library and promoting reading among school children in Kpalime, Togo (www.cadip.org/volunteering-in-togo).

The placement of volunteers is done on a first-come first-served basis and projects usually fill up pretty quickly. That’s why we advise all the interested volunteers to get enrolled as soon as they’ve found in the program the project they would like to join. The enrollment procedure is quick and easy and can be completed online (www.cadip.org/enrol).

Each applicant chooses the projects he/she wants to apply for and puts them in order of preference in the Volunteer enrollment form. Only the first project choice is a compulsory field, however one or two alternative choices will increase your chances to be placed. We proceed the placement in this same order. Our organization is well-known for its easy and fast procedure. Your placement will be confirmed no later than 7 days after you submit all required documents and payment information. With the application we require the payment information because we charge the participation fee and the annual membership right after successful placement and before confirming it to the person. Sarah P’s comments: Actually, this position is listed as ‘paid volunteer’ but that is an oxymoron. The position does cover expenses plus a small salary which is much better than volunteer positions where you have to pay!  On the negative side, it sounds like quite a job, of which overseeing the library is a small part. The deadline was May 20 but if you are interested, shoot of a quick letter and resume. Volunteer and low pay positions are usually not as strict about deadlines as jobs.

The position of Cambodia Director for Wings of Hope/John Givonetti Giving is a multifaceted position managing a program that aims to provide rural Cambodian children (currently 500 to 600 students in three schools) with the skills to pull themselves out of poverty, primarily through instruction in English and computer skills. Teaching is conducted by an organized group of high school students (Student Teachers) that JGG has trained to teach both subjects (currently 60 Student Teachers). The position is based in Bak Chinhchien, Pursat Province, Cambodia with occasional travel outside the area to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Khmer Language skills are not a requirement. We are seeking a minimum one year commitment.

While the JGG Director is responsible for all JGG program activities, the primary allocation of the Director’s time and effort will be the administrative functions specified in General Responsibilities.

Skill Requirements

1.      Effective organizational skills & multi-tasking ability in a developing country context

2.      Very strong record keeping and reporting abilities are essential. This is a primary skill requirement.

3.      Good written and verbal presentation/reporting

4.      The ability to be culturally sensitive while achieving the goals of JGG.

5.      Good working knowledge of English including writing/conversation/grammar. No teaching degree is required.

Responsibilities

1.      General

a.      Persistent (everything is exponentially more difficult to do in Cambodia) and timely response to tax issues, government NGO operating requirements, insurance maintenance, building maintenance, construction projects, banking and internal accounting requirements.

b.     Manage budget and expense journal entry process (development/implementation/periodic reporting) and clearly reporting this information expeditiously to the JGG Chairman.

c.      Facility management for the two Learning Centers, the Siem Respite Center, the two Phnom Penh Dormitories and smaller projects.

d.     Timely reporting to the Chairman of all JGG activities and prompt response to requests made by the Chairman and to the needs of Wings of Hope, a supporting charity.

e.     Maintain with updates and improvements JGG’s Facebook page and website.

f.       Implement/manage all other JGG activities and new projects as they develop.

g.      Maintain good relationships with all levels of the Cambodian government (National/Provincial/Commune/Village) and school administration leaders.

h.     Manage/develop staff and oversee their activities (currently 3 full-time Program Assistants (one position is open), 1 full-time Librarian, 5 part-time Professional teachers, 2 part-time US Peace Corps Volunteers, 2 House Supervisors (at Siam Reap and Phnom Penh dormitories) and 1 full-time House Attendant in Siem Reap.

2.      English Outreach and Computer Training Programs

a.      Train new and existing Student Teachers in teaching, English and computer skills including conducting weekend instruction classes.

b.     Manage/train the professional part-time English teacher.

c.      Conduct weekly review meeting with JGG staff and Student Teachers.

d.     Monitor classroom activities with Student Teachers to insure the quality of the English training.

e.     Develop/manage computer training for Student Teachers and selected other students.

f.       Manage the four part-time math, science and English teachers preparing Student Teachers in their final high school year for the 12^th grade exam.

g.      Coordinate JGG activities between Bak Chinhchien, Romlech, and Koh Svey schools.

3.      John Givonetti Learning Centers (2 buildings)

a.      Train/manage Librarian.

b.     Develop program for Student Teachers to assist in Library.

c.      Create/implement development plans for both facilities including implementing computer training, and the acquisition of new books, video material and related programs.

4.      John Givonetti Respite Center & Dormitories – Siem Riep & Phnom Penh (3 buildings)

a.      Utilize the House Supervisor to oversee all Respite Center activities including the housing of former Student Teachers now attending university and JGG guests.

About us:The Arajuno Road Project (ARP)/Proyecto Ruta del Arajuno was created in 2008 with the goal of supporting the schools and improving the opportunities available in the communities along the road located between the small city of Puyo and the rural community of Arajuno – a culturally and ecologically diverse area – in the Ecuadorian Amazon. The program works in rural communities providing support in education, improving the infrastructure and learning environment of schools, and working on community development and conservation programs, such as school gardens and reforestation.

Position summary:ARP established a center in collaboration with one of our partner communities in 2016, which acts both as the base for ARP operations and community functions. This position helps with community center development, and runs basic courses and opportunities. What we ask from you: Volunteers/interns should be able to commit to at least one pre-defined service period and priority will be given to those applying for consecutive periods. Sarah P’s comments:  While obtaining an international position may be your goal, one way of gaining experience is to volunteer.  Idealist currently has three positions of interest.  Idealist, a US nonprofit organization, began life in 1995 as Action Without Borders, with the goal of creating a global network of people and organizations working towards the goal of a world where all people can live free and dignified lives. Online and globally, Idealist.org connects 100,000 people with jobs and volunteer and action opportunities posted by 90,000 organizations around the world. The organization operates in English, Spanish and French. You can use this site to post information about yourself and/or search for both internship and volunteer opportunities.

I have noticed in recent years, many more jobs posted vs. internships and volunteering opps. There has also been an increasing number of US postings, however there are still international listings.  Unfortunately, there is no way to search for only ‘international’ and the best method is to enter ‘library’ or ‘librarian’ as a keyword and scroll through the listings.

Sarah P’s comments:  I first heard about the Sand Castle Library in 2015 when the previous Director contacted me and asked for volunteers.  We corresponded so I could determine whether it was this a legit opportunity which it definitely is. Then in-stepped Librarian Cate Caryle who flew down from Canada and volunteered. If you are seeking a volunteer opportunity and/or a way to gain international experience, Cate recommends this organization and just forwarded a message from current Director Cam O-Brien:

–This year Bookmobile reading specialists are adding science to the model and using it to teach science concepts with reading comprehension. The library will have a STEM component with Fridays dedicated to hands-on activities. We can use lesson plans and volunteers. Skype lessons on these topics would be helpful as well as a volunteer librarian with Spanish to assist the current staff person.

Volunteer: 2017 Guatemala Service Trip

Sarah P’s comments: I received this trip information from a few sources including from Cate Carlyle who commented: I found it to be a very worthwhile and positive experience. Cate is a Canadian librarian who volunteers internationally and is an editor for the International Journal of Librarianship.

This is the eighth consecutive spring that LWB is traveling to the Miguel Angel Asturias Academy in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. Since 2010 over 120 librarians and library science students have spent more than 40 working days onsite to help our partner realize and grow their dream of an open stacks, circulating school library. What started as cinder blocks in 2010 is now the vibrant center of the school.

LWB uses this annual service trip to execute our remote work on the ground, to discuss emerging needs with our partner, and to re-connect with students and school staff. We invite you to work alongside us this year from April 21 to May 1, 2017.

This year’s work at the Academy will include ongoing collection management activities (cataloguing, processing, and organizing materials), library programming for students, and training for teachers. LWB works with Asturias to also provide opportunities for trip participants to engage in activities that will help nurture a comprehensive understanding of libraries, education and culture in Guatemala. Typically trip participants are also given the opportunity to help finalize the last weekend activity (for example, visit scenic Lake Atitlán or trek to one of Guatemala’s volcanic peaks).

Primary Projects

• Cataloging, processing, and adding new items to the library’s collection.
• Library programming targeting all students and levels through multi-day library events.
• Professional development workshops for teachers supporting library integration into the curriculum.

Housing and Food
While in Quetzaltenango (Xela), participants will stay and eat most of their meals at the COFA Catholic Retreat Centre. On the weekends meals are eaten with a local family or at local restaurants. Vegetarian options will be available.

Expectations
All trip volunteers are expected to:

• Attend online meetings (3-4) to discuss projects and receive training on the Asturias Library and the local community context. These meetings are mandatory for all volunteers.
• Join and contribute to a working team before the trip.
• Participate in pre-and post-trip assessments (e.g. evaluation surveys).

Program Fees
The program fee is $1525 CAD* (= ~$1160 USD) for 11 days. This total covers lodging, food, transportation and entrance to all activities within Guatemala, as well as a fundraising fee to support LWB programs. Trip participants are responsible for paying their own airfare to and from Guatemala.

There is a $500 CAD non-refundable deposit due by all accepted applicants by February 24. The remainder of the fees ($1025 CAD) can be paid at the same time or by March 10*.

In addition, all trip participants are expected to bring extra spending money for additional purchases such as souvenirs and snacks, as well as occasional meals in Guatemala ($50-100 is adequate).

Note, in previous years some participants have created crowdfunding campaigns to wholly or partially offset the costs of the trip. LWB uses our social media channels to promote those campaigns for participants.
