Sarah P’s comments:  I am normally wary of positions which ask a person to both teach and run a library as, in my experience, the library usually comes second and thus suffers.  If you apply and interview I would ask questions about the equal division of duties. Could not find any reviews.

Responsibilities
The Quarry Bay School Learning Centre (Library) is an integral part of the learning experience provided for students; and an essential link between the IB Primary Years’ Programme (PYP) curriculum framework and information resources. Our vision is to foster an environment that not only encourages children to love books and reading; but also helps students develop higher order information and research fluency skills.

The Lead Teacher (Teacher Librarian) will be an enthusiastic and exemplary classroom practitioner. They will be passionate about literature, reading, learning technologies (LTs) and collaboration with classroom teachers, specialist teachers and year groups. They will promote the profile of the Quarry Bay School’s Learning Centre as a significant resource and a critical part of daily learning across all year levels. They will be a leader of learning and teaching across the school and promote high quality opportunities for the students. They will ensure a dynamic, consistent and school wide approach to the position.

The Lead Teacher (Teacher Librarian) will further be expected to:

  • engage and challenge learners within a supportive, information-rich learning environment
  • provide exemplary library and information services
  • evaluate student learning and library programs and services to inform professional practice
  • create and nurture an information-rich learning environment which supports the needs of the school community
  • provide access to information resources through efficient, effective and professionally-managed systems including the provision of digital resources and an online presence (i.e, QOODLE, social media)
  • foster an environment where learners are encouraged and empowered to read, view, listen and respond for understanding and enjoyment
  • collaborate with teachers to plan and implement information literacy and literature programs that result in positive student learning outcomes including close collaboration with the ICT Coordinator
  • ensure that their programs are responsive to the needs of learners in the school community
  • support learning and teaching by providing equitable access to professionally-selected resources
  • assist individual learners to develop independence in their learning
  • appreciate and teach the appropriate and relevant use of LTs and information resources
  • ensure that the library’s policies and procedures implement the school’s mission
  • provide exemplary reference and information services to the school community
  • strategically plan and budget for improvement in library and information services and programs
  • evaluate student learning to provide evidence of progress in information literacy and reading

Requirements
You will need to be an experienced and qualified primary teacher. In addition you will have the required knowledge, skills and understanding of information literacy to enable you to support students across the primary phase; to realise the full potential of the library as a centre of learning.

Apart from being a great teacher, having a recognised library qualification would be beneficial. You will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and energetic individual who loves working with children. You will be a great team player, very well organised and possess excellent spoken and written English skills. Your warm personality coupled with strong interpersonal skills will enable you to communicate effectively with all members of the school community.

Whilst library qualifications are desirable, you will also be someone who has a love of books and be sufficiently well read to be able to recommend appropriate reading materials to both students and adults. You will feel confident and comfortable working with groups of children, staff and parents across the primary phase and be passionate about learning.

The candidate for the Lead Teacher (Teacher Librarian) must be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria. He/she must:

  • fully understand the need to cater for the social, cultural and developmental backgrounds of learners in program implementation and curriculum resourcing
  • have a comprehensive understanding of literacy, literature for children and young adults, curriculum and specific programs in schools
  • have a detailed knowledge of how to promote and foster reading
  • understand that professionally managed and resourced school libraries are crucial to the achievements of the school community
  • have had primary school library experience or role which demonstrates leadership of learning and teaching across the school
  • have understanding/experience of OLIVER
  • Have PYP experience or experience in a transdiscipinary curriculum

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Director, Distributed eLibrary and the Dean of the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, this position supports the institution’s biomedical research program by providing (library) services relevant to the biomedical research life cycle, with a focus on analyzing data sets and editing manuscripts in preparation for presentation or publication. Sarah P’s comments:  Palau is arguably one of the nicest places in the South Pacific.  The pay is low but that is true for the whole region.  This is an interesting position because it is an ‘opportunity for a librarian with experience in instruction to share expertise in library services and to serve as a leader in Palau’s library community‘.  Earlier this year the college advertised for a Director of Library Services (first 5/2 and then re-posted 9/22) however this appears to be a different position.  For anyone interested in gaining some Library Science teaching experience without needing a PHd, it could be a good opportunity.

Salary: $18,009 TO $27,725 Per Annum (depending on qualifications and work experience). Benefits include health and life insurance, 10/2 annual work schedule (10 months on and 2 months paid leave), and paid relocation expenses. Housing provided.
