Hiring Fair: ISS Online iFair

10.1.17 –  ISS (International School Services) iFair / Virtual Hiring Fair

Date: October 14, 2017
Time: 8am-12pm US Eastern Time

Sarah P’s comments:  For anyone interested in the international school librarian market ISS is hosting a first-of-the-season hiring fair. This is an opportunity to gain a break-in position for those without the ‘A list’ attributes, namely international experience, school media certification on top of an MLIS (but you should be able to show you are working to obtain it), and/or being single or part of a teaching team. You must be a registered ISS candidate to attend so if you are interested you need to contact ISS ASAP because establishing a file can take time due to credentials and recommendations needing to be verified.

Please be aware that, while ISS is a recruiting agency they also now run their own schools as well, which are, unfortunately, not always top tier.  So, be sure to join ISR, International Schools Review, and carefully read the reviews of any schools you might be interested in.

(For more information about international school librarianship please read Chapter 3 of my book.)

What is an iFair®?

International Schools Services is proud to be the first to offer this type of event for schools and candidates worldwide! It’s the best part of an IRC from the comfort of your home/office. Connect with schools early in the season and set up interviews. No taking time away from school – just you, your laptop (phone or tablet) and ISS recruiting schools connecting online. Everyone will be online at the same time, so you can instantly schedule your interviews.

With the use of technology, finding a position has never been easier or more convenient.
Schools will create a virtual booth, which candidates will enter when the event is live. Each school can customize its booth with information such as: logo and website; information about the school and country; salary and benefits packages; and open positions. Recruiters will be online and waiting to talk to candidates. Candidates can enter as many booths as they like, queue and communicate with recruiters.

Initial communication will be done via instant messaging, but Skype is now fully integrated, so you can move directly to a follow-up Skype interview.

Webinar: Why Teach Abroad?

8.21.17 –  ISS sponsored Webinar: Why Teach Abroad
August 304-5PM EST (USA)

Sarah P’s comments:  Here we go for the International School Librarian recruiting season. This is the area where the most international positions are listed and thus is the easiest way to break into international work. While it is still a good idea to join an agency and be vetted, the majority of schools are now advertising on TIE and accepting direct applications. However, attending this free ISS webinar will give you an overview of the field.

ISS (International Schools Services) is one of the oldest US schools recruiting agencies but please be aware that they also now run their own schools as well, which are, unfortunately, not always top tier.  So, be sure to join ISR, International Schools Review, and carefully read the reviews of any schools you might be interested in.

For more information about the hiring process for international school librarians please refer to Chapter 3 of my book and/or visit the Resources page.

Sarah P’s comments: Technically this is a job since there is a salary however it is really low. You must also be bilingual and in one part of the ad they say accepting applicants with library studies yet in another paragraph they state you must be a philosophy major…confusing.  However, if you are seeking international library experience but do not yet have a master’s degree, and speak Spanish, here is an opportunity to gain some experience.

Job: School Librarian

6.5.17 –  Teacher Librarian
Think International School, Hong Kong

Sarah P’s comments:  A late posting from a fairly new school.  I could only find one review which was suspiciously positive, by which I mean that when you read an only positive, glowing review you have to wonder who wrote it…So, worth checking out but make sure to read all material and ask questions if interested.

Teacher Librarian Needed for August 2017- Think International School Job to start mid August 2017 for an initial contract of two years.

We have two libraries, one for lower primary and one for upper primary and secondary.

Candidate must be a trained teacher and a trained Librarian. He/she will supervise two library technicians to maintain the two libraries. He will make plans for the school library, add resources to the library where he sees fit, and organize library sessions for Primary and secondary students.

Interested candidates are to send their resume with expected salary to

Choylily@yahoo.com

Job: Secondary School Librarian

5.30.17 –  Secondary School Librarian
American United School of Kuwait, Sabah Al Salem, Kuwait

Sarah P’ s comments: A late posting via TIE but also listed on their website. No reviews on ISR, one on Glassdoor which gave the school 2 stars, and the following short article on Teach Abroad which shared facilities and salary information. I wouldn’t worry about the qualifications in that they are requesting an education major.  A master’s degree in library science is the qualification along with the school media certification.  However, at this late date if you do not have the certification but can at least show you are working toward it, then I believe you will be accepted.  The other acceptable route is to have an education certification with school media certification in addition with no MLIS.

(I personally don’t like this as how can anyone learn to be an effective librarian by taking only six classes?  Who cares how wonderful your classes are if you can’t manage the database well enough to check out books? Just saying…)

The school provides a 1:1 tablet program, with a high speed Wi-Fi network that allows educators and students to take advantage of this pedagogical change in the way that information is provided in a school setting.

Salary &  Benefits:

AUS offers a competitive salary package, transportation, Housing, Medical insurance, Visa sponsorship, Airline tickets to and from Point of origin, annual home leave, Re-location allowance. Teachers with school-age children enjoy free tuition.

5.18.17 –  TeacherHorizons, UK

Sarah P’s comments: I just received this e-mail (group mailing) from TeacherHorizons, an international recruiter for schools. I have no reviews for this agency but on their site, it says they were started by a group of former international teachers is is interesting. One item I did not like was that in order to locate Librarian positions, you must choose ‘Other’! As always, please read reviews on International Schools Review of the schools before applying.
