Job: School Librarians (3)

5.18.17 –  TeacherHorizons, UK

Sarah P’s comments: I just received this e-mail (group mailing) from TeacherHorizons, an international recruiter for schools. I have no reviews for this agency but on their site, it says they were started by a group of former international teachers is is interesting. One item I did not like was that in order to locate Librarian positions, you must choose ‘Other’! As always, please read reviews on International Schools Review of the schools before applying.

Hi Sarah P,

Take a look at some of the Librarian opportunities we are looking to fill this week.

Hiring Fair: ISS Virtual iFair

5.4.17 –  ISS (International School Services) iFair / Virtual Hiring Fair

Sarah P’s comments:  For anyone interested in the international school librarian market ISS is hosting another hiring fair, this one after the height of the hiring season has concluded.  This is an opportunity to gain a break-in position for those without the ‘A list’ attributes, namely international experience, school media certification on top of an MLIS (but you should be able to show you are working to obtain it), and/or being single or part of a teaching team. You must be a registered ISS candidate to attend so if you are interested you need to contact ISS ASAP because establishing a file can take time due to credentials and recommendations needing to be verified.

Please be aware that, while ISS is a recruiting agency they also now run their own schools as well, which are, unfortunately, not always top tier.  So, be sure to join ISR, International Schools Review, and carefully read the reviews of any schools you might be interested in.

May 17, 2017

 What is an iFair®?

International Schools Services is proud to be the first to offer this type of event for schools and candidates worldwide! It’s the best part of an IRC from the comfort of your home/office. Connect with schools early in the season and set up interviews. No taking time away from school – just you, your laptop (phone or tablet) and ISS recruiting schools connecting online. Everyone will be online at the same time, so you can instantly schedule your interviews.

With the use of technology, finding a position has never been easier or more convenient.

Schools will create a virtual booth, which candidates will enter when the event is live. Each school can customize its booth with information such as: logo and website; information about the school and country; salary and benefits packages; and open positions. Recruiters will be online and waiting to talk to candidates. Candidates can enter as many booths as they like, queue and communicate with recruiters.

Initial communication will be done via instant messaging, but Skype is now fully integrated, so you can move directly to a follow-up Skype interview.

Job: K-12 Librarian

4.7.17 –  K-12 Librarian
The American School of Asuncion, Paraguay

Sarah P’s comments:  I originally posted this position in 2.21.17 from TIE. It disappeared but now has popped back up again on TIE so I assume something fell through. However, when I check their website it is not posted there*.  This school is well-established but, as always, I encourage you to read the reviews on International School Reviews before deciding whether to apply. I am a fan of South America and loved my time there however there are challenges such as the cost of living and teaching wealthy students. For more information, visit the school link (above) where they have a Working at ASA FAQ PDF as well as a Living in Paraguay guide.

*Note:  Strange things do happen with international hiring, that is just an unfortunate fact, as many experienced expats will tell you. This is also the time of year (late in the hiring season) when a lot of juggling and jockeying happens between schools and candidates.  Please remember that it usually takes a lot of resilience and resolve to land an international position, and hang in there…

The American School of Asuncion offers an early childhood through college-preparatory program to a multi-national student population of more than 703 students representing over 24 different nationalities. Class sizes range from 18–20 students and we have instructional assistants to assist each teacher in the elementary classrooms. With the exception of language and Paraguayan studies classes, all classes are taught in English. The school has an established, standards-based curriculum accessible on the web and provides a wide range of co-curricular activities. ASA is fully accredited by AdvancED as well as the Paraguayan Ministry of Education. The ASA faculty consists of certified teachers from North American and Paraguay, and many of the faculty possess advanced degrees. The school also offers on-site Master’s Degree courses from a U.S.-accredited university to help enhance the continued professional development of teachers.

Located in a pleasant suburban area within the capital city, our spacious and well-maintained 12 acre campus has an open design with separate air-conditioned buildings to support the early childhood, elementary, middle school, high school, and specialist programs. Educational facilities include a library, computer labs, multipurpose room, indoor gymnasium, cafeteria, track, outdoor and indoor basketball courts, an elementary covered basketball court and play area, two playgrounds, and soccer fields. We invite you to visit our website at http://www.asa.edu.py to discover the many personal and professional benefits of working at ASA.

Job: K-12 Librarian

4.4.17 –  K-12 Librarian
American Academy for Girls, Kuwait City, Kuwait

Sarah P’s comments:  As you can see, I was asked to post this position.  I am usually very willing to do this when someone personally writes because it usually indicates that the institution is sincerely looking to fill the position with a qualified candidate. This job could be a potential position for someone looking to gain both international and school library experience as Shannon says they are willing to take someone without school certification (something you could be working on while in the position). It is also a rare advantage (in my opinion) to have a HS Principal who has an MLS. As always, please read the reviews carefully and think about whether the school and the location would be a good fit. I worked in the Middle East for many years (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE & Oman) and enjoyed it however the experience is not for everyone.

Dear Sarah,
I am a fan of your blog, and ask if you would be so kind as to post our current opening for a librarian.  This is a great opportunity for someone who may just be starting out and needs to work and save their income to perhaps pay off student loan debt and gain international librarian school experience.  It isn’t necessary that she be a certified school library media specialist, a Bachelors in Library & Information Science will do.  Our school is relatively small, all girls and has an easy going atmosphere.  Thank you, I appreciate it.  Shannon Rooney, MLS (Kent State University, 2005)
