Sarah P’s comment: International school library positions are by far the most available and often the way to work in a remote country. For the better schools you will a school media certification. The above list is from TIE (The International Educator) which you need to subscribe to in order to learn the details of how to apply. TIE is well worth the annual $39.00 fee as their website also offers all sorts of information about international schools and how to obtain a job in one. They even maintain a resumes database.
Job: Supervisor – Library & Technical Services
10/06/13 Supervisor – Library & Technical Services
Higher Colleges of Technology, United Arab Emirates
Sarah P’s comment: There are 13 campuses spread all over the UAE and experiences range from good to awful. I suspect this position would be at Central Services in Abu Dhabi. Nice city, pleasant country overall and the most moderate of the Gulf countries however be careful of working with the top management here as ‘off with her/his head’ is the norm. Or as one professor I knew put it the motto of HCT is “to set up your subordinate to fail and then blame him”. In this system you are better off being a simple librarian down in Al Ain or over in Fujeirah and staying away from all the politics and strife. Here is a link to a website that reveals all: HCT Sucks!

Job: Science & Technology Librarian
10/12/13 Science & Technology Subject Specialist
KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology), Thuwal, Saudi Arabia
Sarah P.’s comment: Be very careful of accepting a contract in Saudi Arabia. I worked in Saudi Arabia and did actually enjoy my time there. However I did my research before I applied. While there are some reputable companies, colleges, and schools please be aware that you are at the mercy of the institution which hires you. KAUST has very mixed reviews and like many places in Saudi, was started with great promise and has fallen. If you do apply know that it is a long and tedious process with very little logic as to who is chosen. Google ‘Kaust’ and ‘reviews’ for more info.
