9.29.16 –  Off-island, En-route, In-between

I am sitting in the Paris airport watching all the people flow around me…transitioning from one world to another. Leaving the intense, sublime, problematical, heartfelt world of Algeria and returning to the fast-paced, familiar, autumn-colored world of America.

I love this part of traveling because it is in the moment living…however the point of this message is to say that, when I have recovered from this vortex, I will be paying more attention to posting jobs and answering e-mails. (My apologies if I have been slow to respond.) I will also write more about my library in Algiers…

Bon voyage, Sarah P.

News: ISS partners with AASSA

9.23.16
Sarah P’s comments: I recently received the e-mail shared below. ISS (International School Services) is touting this announcement as ‘good news’ however what you need to know is that in previous years you could simply register directly with AASSA and attend their fair.  AASSA , Queens University TORF, and the UNI Overseas Recruiting Fair were the only independent recruiting fairs.  All the other recruiting fairs are sponsored by ISS or Search Associates.  (For more information about the hiring process for international school librarians please refer to Chapter 3 of my book and/or visit the Resources page.)

In recent months ISS has been working hard on your behalf to expand the opportunities available to you. Resulting from our efforts is a new partnership we are happy to announce today. This recruiting season ISS will be collaborating with AASSA to enhance your recruiting experience.        ISS Candidates who register for the ISS IRC/Job Fair in Atlanta (Dec. 4-6) are also welcome to register and attend the AASSA Recruiting Fair in Atlanta (Dec. 1-4).

AASSA (Association of American Schools in South America) was founded in 1977 to help increase understanding through international education and improve the quality of teaching and learning in Association schools.

Attending the AASSA fair is optional! You will not have to have a recruiting file with AASSA to be able to attend their fair. The only requirement is that you have an active ISS recruiting file. Your active ISS recruiting file will be shared with AASSA for the duration of their recruiting event should you decide to register and attend.

There will be no additional charge for registering and attending either event. This partnership is for the current recruiting season only, however, ISS may choose to continue it for future recruiting fairs. Please do not contact AASSA as all arrangements will come from us here at ISS. We will keep you informed as more information becomes available with regards to this partnership and the upcoming events in Atlanta.

American Public University System (APUS), USA

Sarah P’s comments:  APU was founded in 1991 to offer online degrees to the US Armed Forces.  The reviews from students and faculty are generally positive and they seem to be a growing organization. In the past two APUS has posted five different positions so it seem this model is working for them and could give someone a steady income while allowing some freedom to travel as long as you have a good internet connection.  It did not say whether the position requires US citizenship.

Job: K-12 Librarian

9.20.16 – K-12 Library Media Specialist
Saudi Aramco, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

Sarah Prescott’s comments:  Aramco has been around since the 1950’s and has one of the longest established international school systems. Traditionally they offered great pay and benefits and life on the compound(s) was very pleasant if a bit staid. Lately, however there are reports of cutbacks on the benefits and also rumors that the education system will soon be outsourced.  Aramco has always hired via the agencies and hiring fairs: International Schools Services (ISS); Search Associates; TIE (The International Educator); and the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). However, they do now let you apply directly online…see above link.

Life in Saudi Arabia is challenging in some ways due to traffic and travel restrictions (women not driving, etc.) but as you are living on the compound, these annoyances do not usually directly affect your life. It’s a situation of can you happily live a life like this?  A lot depends on your situation.  We went to Saudi when our children were very young and it was a good lifestyle. If you are single however it might be boring (and traditionally they have tended to prefer to hire couples and/or families).

Req Number: 13390BR

Saudi Aramco is currently seeking a Library Media Specialist Teacher to work in the Saudi Aramco Expatriate Schools Division in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

Employees of the Saudi Arabian Oil Company enjoy a highly competitive compensation and benefits package, generous vacation schedule, and a family-friendly lifestyle. SAES strives to be a preeminent school system where students achieve their maximum potential in a culture of continuous improvement. In support of this vision, SAES is seeking highly qualified, accomplished, passionate, and collaborative educators who love to work with children, aspire to learn and grow, and eager to embark on a life-changing opportunity.

Minimum Requirements:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree with specialization in appropriate subject/grade and hold a valid North American teaching certificate/license that reflects relevant endorsement(s).

A minimum of six years of full-time experience in a preK-12 school setting is required. Candidates must have worked full-time in an educational setting within the past three years.

Candidates must demonstrate an excellent command of oral and written English. Candidates must demonstrate successful capacity to work collaboratively, as well as independently. Membership in professional organizations preferred.

Duties & Responsibilities:
SAES Library Media Specialists work collaboratively to deliver an effective library media program utilizing adopted and approved materials and resources that will support district-wide literacy learning and development. SAES librarians will maintain systems and procedures for effective, ethical, and safe use of the library’s online and physical resources, facilities, and collections. Library Media Specialists adhere to their professional organization code of conduct and research based educational practice. In addition, Library Media Specialists are responsible for nurturing positive professional relationships and for working collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues to optimize the educational experience for the entire learning community.
