Appointment period: twelve months, with possibility of further appointment for up to three years

Duties:
The appointee will assist the project leader in the research project – “Enhancing information literacy in Hong Kong higher education through the development and implementation of shared interactive multimedia courseware”.
The appointee will also be required to:
(a) take a substantial leadership role in conducting educational needs assessment for the project;
(b) co-ordinate the intellectual input of collaborators, and communicate with vendors and contractors to develop and refine the shared interactive multimedia courseware;
(c) liaise with trainers and speakers to conduct training programmes for stakeholders to enhance and promote information literacy in the higher education sector;
(d) administer the course enhancement funds to promote partnerships building between faculty and librarians; and
(e) manage the implementation, promotion and evaluation of the project, as well as report writing.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have:
(a) a doctoral degree in Education, Social Science, Information/Knowledge Management or related discipline, plus at least six years of postdoctoral research experience or equivalent (applicants will less years of relevant experience will be considered for the post of Project Fellow or Postdoctoral Fellow);
(b) course design and authoring experience as well as IT, multimedia and content authoring skills;
(c) experience in managing and implementing research projects at the university level;
(d) good analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills, and
(e) an excellent command of English.

Job: e-Learning Consultant

Sarah P’s comments:  This position is not labeled ‘librarian’ but involves many of our skills and education.  This is a small, fairly new NGO however there are two positive Glassdoor reviews as well as a short promotional video on YouTube.

 

Synopsis

The Kaizen Company (www.thekaizencompany.com)is soliciting applications for the position of E-learning consultant for the USAID-Local Capacity Development (LCD) project.

Job description

Under the general direction of senior staff of the company, consultant will be responsible for providing support to the LCD project office and program operations. However, the majority (80%) of his/her time will be spent working on developing E-learning tools.

Mainly the consultant will work with our technical team to convert their management presentations into e-templates and e-trainings, which will make up LCD’s e-learning library of support offerings. This is one of the major project that LCD want to work in-depth and capture the valuable documents produced so far through its specialists.

USAID has recently approved LCD’s initiative to take a ‘flip the classroom’ approach in the provision of trainings, and the creation of an e-learning library consisting of e-training videos, short e-tests, and other e-tools and templates (e.g. how-to guides, templates with instructions)  to meet this objective.

This is to provide our partner organizations access to online tutorials and be able to:

1. Learn about different (mostly management) topics by watching short video presentations or filling out templates prior to attending in-person trainings or receiving technical assistance.

2. Refer back to the online training materials and use them as a reference whenever needed.

3. Share these e-trainings with a greater number of their colleagues, both at their home office and field locations

4. Request LCD for further guidance on the topics after watching these online materials on their own.

The consultant will also assist in ensuring LCD team engagements with partners and clients are recorded and updated in LCD data base continuously and timely and other areas related to communications and project implementation, and responding to a wide array of routine tasks and requests related to program management and implementation.

Tasks Related to Accomplishing the Objectives

The Consultant shall use his/her education, considerable experience, and additional understanding gleaned from the tasks specified in section A above to:

  • Establish standard, branded formats and guidelines for each e-resource type
  • In consultation with LCD staff members, identify & propose a suitable and effective way of recording the training materials on a video format.
  • Work closely with LCD team members convert the training materials produced by LCD to online video tutorials.
  • Establish a pipeline and systems for identifying, prioritizing, and creating subsequent e-tools at reasonable cost

Qualifications

The Consultant shall have the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this consultancy:

Educational and Work Experience Qualifications

  • BA degree, preferably in Management, Communications, Information Technology, or on related area
  • 2+  years of experience in e-learning, e-video creation or other highly  relevant area
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Proficiency in computer skill more than MS office application is required.

Responsibilities

The Secretary General is the Chief Executive Officer and head of IFLA’s Secretariat, responsible for the organization’s success and the consistent achievement of its mission including the strategic and operational direction and financial management of IFLA within policies determined by IFLA General Assembly and Governing Board; appointment of staff; provision of advice to the officers and Governing Board of IFLA and the implementation of decisions; coordination of IFLA programs including the core activities and regional offices; ensuring that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it; serving on the Board of trustees of the IFLA Stichting Foundation and as an officer of the IFLA conference holding companies, and, such other responsibilities as are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of IFLA.

Requirements

The Secretary General is the Chief Executive Officer, with managerial, leadership, diplomatic, executive, communication and financial skills of a high order and able to deal with the full range of management activities in an organization with worldwide interests and an expanding number of staff (16 FTE in the Secretariat). The Secretary General is expected to embrace diversity and foster a culture of professional development and trust in staff. The incumbent is expected to further develop the IFLA brand and to exploit its potential to achieve greater recognition and impact. The appointee should be fluent in written and spoken English and able to communicate in one or more of the other six official languages of IFLA: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian and Spanish.

Term of employment: Initially an 18-month contract with an option to renew.

Salary and benefits: An attractive package of salary and benefits will be negotiated with the successful applicant. The successful applicant must be prepared to live in or near The Hague, The Netherlands.

Working hours: 36 hrs/week

Start date: It is expected that the successful applicant will relocate (if required) to The Hague by March 2016. The appointee will assume the position of Secretary General in May 2016.

News: Call for submissions…

6/18/15 –  Call for international submissions for the Journal of Web Librarianship:

 

Journal of Web Librarianship Special Issue: International Voices

Do you work in a library outside of the U.S. and Canada? The Journal of Web Librarianship is seeking research articles, case studies, and other types of submissions from librarians around the world. AlthoughJWL has aimed to be an international journal from the beginning, the bulk of JWL submissions come from authors at U.S. and Canadian libraries. For this special issue, therefore, JWL will focus on library web projects and research outside these countries.

Topics for the special issue can include (but are not limited to):

· library web page design and redesigns,
· web project management,
· usability testing of library or library-related sites,
· cataloging or classification of Web information,
· user behavior on the web,
· search behaviors,
· social networking and libraries,
· mobile web librarianship,
· digitization or finding aids for unique collections,
· integrating digital collections into catalogs / discovery.

Submissions for this special issue will still undergo a double-blind peer review. However, to support consistency of organization across the issue and offer support to authors who use English as a second language, submissions will first undergo one or more rounds of “collegial review” to provide early feedback to authors about their manuscripts before submission to the blind peer review process.

In addition to following the regular JWL manuscript preparation guidelines, authors are asked specifically to provide information in the introduction about the role and status of libraries in their country or countries, as well as the state of any relevant technologies in their country relative to their topic. For example, an article about a library’s use of social networking to market services would include an explanation about how social networking technologies are generally used in that country (level of adoption, purposes, challenges, etc.).

Job: Technical/Vocational School Librarian

ADVETI, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Sarah P’s comments:  The UAE has recently taken the unprecedented step of outsourcing ALL their K-12 and vocational training which means that foreigners are being brought in to manage and teach their schools.  Why this step has been taken could be the subject of a book however the short story is that they at first tried to teach their own teachers but this has basically failed because, in my opinion, there are far more lucrative and easier jobs for nationals.

Therefore, ads periodically appear for librarians on job sites posted by Teach Away who recruits both for ADEC (Abu Dhabi Educational Council) as well as ADVETI (Abu Dhabi Vocational Education & Training Institute). ADEC is in charge of the K-12 schools whose librarians are normally hired locally.  I have heard from several colleagues that while their libraries do have an ILS (Follett) no one knows how to use it. This situation might be changing however as I notice that ADEC now has a section on their website called ‘Library Upgrade Project‘.

I recently ran into a librarian who had recently worked for ADVETI for two years and she shared some insights about her experience:

Hiring Process:  can be long and frustrating and don’t bank on anything until the contract is signed. Delays and problems have happened to many colleagues. (Sarah: at this time of year however the process will usually be quicker due to an August start date.)

Job & Benefits:  Contracts are for two years and pay and benefits are good.  Libraries in general however are not seen as critical to the mission of the school in the eyes of the administrators in charge.  Therefore, your program, even if successful, may be cut (as happened to this librarian) and/or you may be transferred.  Be careful if you have a teaching degree because there is a large chance you will be asked to teach instead, or in addition to, your librarian duties.  Your success and happiness somewhat depends on which school you are assigned to as there are both good and bad administrators and work situations.

Overall, this could be an opportunity worth pursuing if you understand the benefits as well as the pitfalls.  UAE remains a stable and safe country and is culturally very open due to the fact only 11% of the country are Emiratis!*  This means that you will be speaking English as it is the common language however it also means that you will not be seeing much of Arabic culture unless you venture into the desert.  It also means that you will encounter some nationals who feel a sense of entitlement and who, having been raised in this climate, will see you are there but to serve them.
