Job: Library Director

1/24/14 – Library Director
Name withheld!, Caribbean Netherlands

An accredited International Medical School is seeking a Library Director. The Medical Library is a 7,000 sq. ft., facility which houses computer terminals and the 300+ students have access to an extensive selection of journals and textbooks, as well as hundreds of online full-text medical journals through OVID and MD Consult.

Sarah P’s comments:  Name withheld – why the secrecy?  It’s really likely that this is the Saba University School of Medicine in the Dutch Caribbean.  There are quite a few positions which crop up if anyone has any interest in medical library positions in nice places.  The question is about reputation.  Here’s an article discusses the ranking of the Caribbean medical schools.

Job: Assistant Library Director

1/17/14 – Assistant Library Director
Leysin American School, Leysin, Switzerland

Leysin American School (a co-educational boarding school serving grades 8-12, located in the Swiss Alps) is seeking an Assistant Library Director who will manage the School’s Belle Époque Campus Library, which mainly serves the IB Diploma Programme. (Start Date: August 2014)

This full-time, salaried position will entail residential duties, student advising, and other responsibilities typically associated with a boarding
school. On-campus housing is provided. Salary commensurate with experience, degree, and qualifications.

Sarah P’s comments:  FYI:
I do not include every school library position on this blog, only those I find noteworthy and reputable.  In this case, Leysin is an established school in a fantastic location and this position is located on the new campus. However there are mixed reviews on ISR which I recommend reading before applying.  An interesting and admirable thing to note is that the Dean of Faculty has posted a response on ISR discussing some of the negative reviews.  I find this admirable since many administrators refuse to acknowledge the existence or importance (to their detriment) of this review site.

Though the work is hard because you will live in the dorms with the students, the salary is good, the technology offered fantastic, and if you are a skier – this is the opportunity to pursue!

Sarah P’s comments:  NYU Abu Dhabi is now four years old and receiving mixed reviews.  I spoke with them at ALA when they were first opening. They were honest in saying that taking a job in Abu Dhabi did not mean you could then transfer back to the NYU US campus.  FYI: The campus is located off the island, a half hour outside of the city.
