Job: Foreign Service Information Management Specialist

We are currently accepting applications for Foreign Service Information Management Specialist positions.

Foreign Service Information Management Specialists (IMS) are responsible for the Department’s Information Resource Management programs and Information Technology systems world-wide. At overseas posts, IMS manage both staff supporting these programs and perform hands-on duties themselves. IMS provide customer support, knowledge management, application support, and manage a world-wide telecommunications network, computer networks, telephone systems, radio networks, and the Diplomatic Pouch and Mail program.

All potential applicants are strongly urged to read the entire vacancy announcement to ensure that they meet all of the requirements for this position before applying.

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and at least 20 years old to apply. They must be at least 21 years of age to be appointed. By law, all career candidates must be appointed to the Foreign Service prior to the month in which they reach age 60. Applicants must also be available for worldwide service, and be able to obtain all required security, medical and suitability clearances.

Sarah P’s comments:  For anyone with strong IT skills this is a good avenue for entering the foreign service.  There do hire librarians, called Information Resource Officers, however the IT positions are more numerous and located in nearly all the embassies meaning advancement and placement are better.

Job: Virtual Researcher (UK Company)

The Virtual Researcher will work within UK business hours to provide professional research support to LAC Group clients to meet their information and knowledge needs.   This individual either needs to be located in the UK/EU (strongly preferred) or be available during UK standard business hours.   In addition, this position is required to know English/European and US law.

Sarah P’s comments:  This position requires legal experience and knowledge and thus would be  a possible good fit for a legal librarian.  It is a virtual position but could be an opportunity to move the UK or Europe and do some traveling.

New York University is seeking a Library Director for its NYU Shanghai portal campus. This is a unique opportunity to join NYU Shanghai as the first Sino-US higher education joint venture to grant a degree that is accredited in the US as well as in China.

In close coordination with NYU New York, this is an exciting opportunity for the Director to manage and lead the implementation of the library program for NYU Shanghai, including program start-up and expansion, staff recruitment and development, facilities requirements, development of joint services with NYU New York and NYU Abu Dhabi, resource management for the library’s budget, and development of policies for library operations and services. The Director of the NYU Shanghai Library will work closely with colleagues in New York and Abu Dhabi to develop services that optimize library staff and resources across the NYU Libraries.

Sarah P’s comments:  NYU appears to be committed to continuing to develop their international campuses.  The past few years the focus has been Abu Dhabi and now Shanghai seems to be the focus.  Librarians hired in Abu Dhabi were not considered part of NYU faculty however it might be different for a Director position.

The University Library System is seeking a Digital Scholarship Librarian to grow a service to address the emergent demand for digital humanities, GIS and data management support at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.  The Digital Scholarship Librarian will lead the newly created digital scholarship service at the Library, foster successful adoption of digital methodologies and tools in research, teaching and learning. He/She will engage primarily with the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Social Science, students, research centres and other university bodies to advise on, promote, implement innovative and evolving digital scholarship tools and resources. This work is in the context of a rich tradition of humanistic research into China and Chinese culture at the University, and a University Library System with strong bi-lingual collections.

Under the direction of the Head of Research and Information Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for the development and delivery of library services and resources that facilitate research and learning at the university.

AUC is an English-medium institution; eighty-five percent of the students are Egyptian and the rest include students from nearly ninety countries, principally from the Middle East, Africa and North America.

Sarah P’s comments:  This could be a good opportunity for someone with the required experience to begin an international career.  Having said that, I would do some careful research as Egypt is in a particularly vulnerable position at the moment and many long-term expat residents have left.
