News: Request for job ad removal from upset HR

6/10/14 – I have received a request to remove a job advert I posted on 4/30/24 for a librarian position with ISR (International School on the Rhine) in Dusseldorf, Germany. They object to the fact that I do not recommend applying to their school.

I am removing this advert as requested and will alter my recommendation to ‘use your own judgment and research carefully before applying’.  However, the e-mail also stated that I based my comments on ‘the ranting of one disgruntled ex-employee’ which indeed would be unfair and is not the truth.  Thus, I also encourage potential candidates to contact the school for their ‘side of the story’ as well as read the multiple reviews on ISR (International School Reviews).

 

Job: Public Information Officer (UN)

This position is located in the Office of the Director of the Outreach Division in the Department of Public Information (DPI). The incumbent reports to the Deputy Director for Partnerships and Public Engagement, who also serves as the Secretary of the Committee on Information.

Sarah P’s comments:  This position is located in the US however I am including it because it is an entry level position for beginning a career with the UN in the Department of Public Information. This is the division which maintains the UN information centers and hires librarians.

This international organization is looking for an individual to be assigned in Austria with mid-level experience in library and information services, or other related fields. Good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish), as well as German, an asset. The incumbent will contribute to the efficient operation of Library services and the proper use of its information resources. S/he is responsible for receiving, identifying and dispatching library materials for processing to the appropriate staff members based on the established guidelines, registering received serial publications in the serials database. S/he will update and maintain serials database: create publication patterns for new and existing serial titles; monitor changes of serial titles (bibliographic mutations), and changes to frequency of publications that require additional, new records, or modifications of existing records and update the information in the serials database.

Sarah P’s comments:  This school has branched out and this ad appeared on ALAjobs.  As it is June I suspect they have been unable to locate a qualified librarian via the regular recruiting channels.  As the reviews on ISR (International School Reviews) are very mixed, I can’t say I am surprised.  I do not usually share ISR posts as they are a subscription site but here is a snippet which I thinks sums up whether you should consider applying:

“It is worth remembering when taking any job here or indeed anywhere in Qatar or the Middle East that this is not the UK or Australia or NZ. The school follows Qatari Labor Law and the visa and sponsorship laws of the country. If you don’t know what this entails I suggest you do some research or ask.”

(Plus, I dislike any school which uses the term teacher-librarian.  It’s a pet peeve as I believe librarians are important as well as a separate entity and it’s demeaning to both teachers and librarians to have the term combined.  I prefer the term ‘teaching librarian’ as that is more accurate a term!)

6/6/14 – WebJunction is offering a webinar on Global Community Library development on July 16th.  The webinar is presented by the Bill & Linda Gates Foundation who sponsors many international library programs (usually via IREX); the CEO of Riecken Libraries, which are located in Honduras and Guatemala and offer employment and volunteering opportunities if you speak passable Spanish; and EIFL, an organization which works with libraries to enable access to digital information in developing and transition countries.

Programs: Int’l Program at ALA in Las Vegas

6/6/14 – For anyone planning on attending ALA in Las Vegas, here is a program they are offering which discusses international school libraries.  Even if you are not a school librarian, I recommend attending this program if you are interested in international work because IRO Carol Brey is one of the speakers.  IRO stands for Information Resource Officer, the official name for US Embassy librarians.  If you are interested in knowing more about this opportunity, click on the IRO link and also try and meet Carol.  All the IRO’s I have met in my travels have been very open about sharing the pros and cons of being one.  (I am also currently completing an e-book in which I talk about this opportunity in more depth. I will post when it is available).
