Sarah P’s comments:  Here is a position which tends to appears every 2-3 years. Any of the territories managed by the US tend to be a bit of a mess however any if you are seeking a funky and unique experience go ahead and apply.  I have never known anyone to regret going to the South Pacific for a few years.  If you would like to know more, read my Spotlight on Sam Crawford who is currently working there as an academic librarian and Acting Library Director.


Annual Salary:      $45,314.54 – $51,609.41

Nature of Position:   The position is in the Library Programs & Services Department and under the supervision of the Dean of Student Services.  It oversees the Saipan campus libraries and acts as a liaison to the Rota and Tinian instructional sites.  The Director is responsible for planning, development, coordination, supervision, and evaluation of all library services and staff.


  • Participates in Program Review and Outcomes Assessment (PROA) activities such as serving on committees and creating composite reports
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with a culturally diverse staff and student body
  • Directs policy for the Library Programs and Services department; including budget preparation, public services, technical services, the Pacific Collection and CNMI Archives, systems development, and collection management
  • Assumes responsibility for daily operations of library services
  • Reviews and reports departmental statistics and participates in Student Learning Outcomes assessment
  • Supervises the allocation and expenditure of departmental funds
  • Ensures the quality and balance of the collection according to accepted principles of collection development and management
  • Recruits, evaluates, and trains library personnel.
  • Establishes and assesses strategic plans for the library department
  • Manages the operations of the CNMI Archives and Pacific Collection
  • Actively seeks and manages external grants
  • Maintains the Koha Open Source Integrated Library system and all digital library content
  • Collaborates with local humanities organizations to increase community access to research materials
  •   Performs other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a U.S. Department of Education recognized and accredited institution
  • Two years of progressively responsible library experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience at the managerial level.
  • Experience with digital asset management systems or a historical research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to academic research and information literacy instruction
  • Familiarity with Integrated Library System management, original cataloging, open source applications, and library metadata schema
  • Experience in archives management, archival processing, and digital humanities
  • An advanced degree in the humanities

Sarah P’s comments:  This is an opportunity only rarely posted.  It is much more common to see positions for USP in Fiji and/or the College of the Marshall Islands.  The pay is actually quite good for the region.  Make sure to ask whether housing is included.  Many years ago I interviewed for a public library position and it was not covered which made going there financially difficult.  FYI: their website was down when I was writing this post however that is common in the Pacific region, keep checking!  Here are some sites with info:

Sarah P’s comments:  This posting appears only once every few years.  For anyone interested in opportunities in the South Pacific there are a few community colleges but only two schools:  the Marianas (public) and one international school on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands.  There is one public library position I have seen listed in the past five years and that was also in the Marianas and there is one volunteer opportunity in the Cook Islands offered through Global Volunteers.

• Is responsible for performing professional library work in the selection, cataloging,
classifying, indexing and circulation of library materials.
• Checks-in and checks-out books and keeps records of all books.
• Assists teachers in locating instructional material needed and in ordering text books for their classes.
• Assists students in finding information they need from the library for their class work.
Types catalog cards and files them according to established systems.
• Takes periodic inventories of library books and materials.
• Issues lists of new books, periodicals, and other informational materials.
• Supervises and instructs library aides.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The normal work period shall be a seven (7) days work period with a maximum non-overtime forty (40) hours.
The Public School System (PSS) operates on a 40 hour work week. Actual working hours will be determined on the basis of operational efficiency. School Principals, Supervisors or Program Managers will establish working schedules subject to the approval of the Commissioner of Education.

• Graduation from U.S. accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree or Higher

• Pass PRAXIS I (PPST-Pre-Professional Skills Tests) OR Core Academic Skills for Educators and Pass appropriate PRAXIS II Content Knowledge Test.
