Sarah P’s comments:  The Marshall Islands are where you should go if you want a funky, out-of-it experience.  They are 5,000 miles far anywhere and you will face challenges such as an unmotivated local population, expensive electricity, and the one ATM machine running out of money on weekends.

This position was listed in Feb. 2015 as simply Librarian’ however, I corresponded with the person who applied and eventually secured, the position and know that she was supposed to do some grant-writing as well.  I guess it worked because it is now advertised as three positions rolled into one. A lot of work but it is a small school.

My son attended this school while we worked at the college and it was the usual scenario – well-meaning teachers trying to make a difference in a challenging place.  If you are interested in the South (really it’s North) Pacific then, with the right attitude, this could be a rewarding and unique experience despite some really irksome moments (we certainly found it so).

FYI:  An excellent book to read about life in the Marshall Islands is Surviving Paradise: One Year on a Disappearing Island by Peter Rudiak-Gould who volunteered to teach English on one of the outer atolls for a year.

Sarah P’s comments: They are stating on their website that the first round of interviews will take place the week of October 24th which seems early but every year recruiting seems to be taking place earlier and earlier.  This school has okay reviews however all note that the cost of living is high and that 50% of your salary will go for accommodation.  This is often the case with European positions.  The schools get away with these low salaries because there are always candidates who want to go to Europe.

Among main responsibilities:
Facility and Resources management

  • Establish and manage the Upper School library budget in collaboration with the Upper School Principal
  • Purchase, in consultation with colleagues, suitable resources, equipment, furniture and supplies for the Upper School Library.
  • Catalogue and prepare for circulation all materials received, in the school’s Library information system.
  • Manage and maintain the school’s Library information system at a whole school’s administrator level, so that circulation of all materials will run smoothly.
  • Troubleshoot any technical issues with the school’s Library information system, in close consultation with the Lower School Library staff and the IT Manager.
  • Promote all the Library resources to the staff on a regular basis to ensure maximum use and to enhance continuing professional development.
  • Ensure that the collection is kept current, up-to-date and relevant to an international school, as well as making sure that is easily accessible for all members of the community.
  • Making sure the Library is an attractive, well-organised and welcoming physical and virtual environment where every member of the ISL community feels comfortable.
  • Oversee the circulation of all the Upper School’s student textbooks, together with the Library Teaching Assistant.

Teaching and curriculum

  • Provide library induction and ongoing support for all teachers and students.
  • Work in partnership with teachers, the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning and the ICT Facilitators on incorporating information fluency and technology skills throughout the curriculum.
  • In collaboration with teachers, guiding students through every aspect of the research process, from asking the right question to finding appropriate information, evaluating information and teaching academic honesty.
  • Offer professional development opportunities to the teachers to keep them up-to-date on teaching resources, best practices in teaching information fluency, technology in education, and reading.
  • Promote reading actively throughout the school in a variety of ways (for example booktalks, reading lists, reading challenges, Book Week, author visits and workshops, Summer Reading programs and other promotional activities).
  • Collaborate closely with the Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning and Dean of External Programmes to provide resources to support the curriculum to enhance student learning and teacher practice.
  • Teaching the IB Diploma students best research practice, in particular for Extended Essays and ToK Essays.

             Staff management and other duties

  • Willing to be an advisor or homeroom teacher.
  • Supervise and direct the work of the Library Assistant, volunteers and student assistants.
  • Liaise on a regular basis with the Upper School Principal.

I am sitting in the Paris airport watching all the people flow around me…transitioning from one world to another. Leaving the intense, sublime, problematical, heartfelt world of Algeria and returning to the fast-paced, familiar, autumn-colored world of America.

I love this part of traveling because it is in the moment living…however the point of this message is to say that, when I have recovered from this vortex, I will be paying more attention to posting jobs and answering e-mails. Qatar is still a safe place to live but cost of living has risen and there have been increasing restrictions in liquor licensing and segregation of men and women. DUTIES:  Working within a team environment, the successful candidate will provide professional assistance in all aspects of a resource library, with specific responsibility for: managing the library’s automated library system and third party open source library software; customization of all ILS modules including acquisitions, serials, circulation, cataloguing, and the online catalogue; maintenance of the library’s website, intranet site, and virtual resources; liaising with the College’s Software Development and IT Departments and external vendors; providing advice and research on best practices in utilizing technology in the provision of library services; and other duties as required.  The library currently uses the Virtua (VTLS) Integrated Library System and the SpringShare web platform.

RequirementsThe successful candidate possesses these qualifications and competencies:

An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent, and experience and knowledge of managing an automated library system (VTLS preferred); library software (MARC and non-MARC metadata standards); and managing electronic resources and databases is required.  Experience in developing websites and using social networking tools with attention to accessibility and usability is also required.  Candidates must have knowledge of emerging technologies and commitment to continuous learning as well as project management skills including systems upgrades and updates.  Experience and knowledge of content and document management software (ie. SharePoint and SpringShare), web-scale discovery services, web proxy servers, and link resolvers is an asset.  Experience working in an academic library, as well as with outreach, training, and instruction is preferred.  Analytical skills, organizational skills and the ability to work independently is essential.  Candidates must demonstrate exemplary communication and interpersonal skills and expert fluency in English. Effective problem solving skills, an ability to work in a team and learner centered environment, and the ability to develop effective working relationships across all levels of the organization are also required. ISS (International School Services) is touting this announcement as ‘good news’ however what you need to know is that in previous years you could simply register directly with AASSA and attend their fair.  AASSA , Queens University TORF, and the UNI Overseas Recruiting Fair were the only independent recruiting fairs.  All the other recruiting fairs are sponsored by ISS or Search Associates.  (For more information about the hiring process for international school librarians please refer to Chapter 3 of my book and/or visit the Resources page.)

 

In recent months ISS has been working hard on your behalf to expand the opportunities available to you. Resulting from our efforts is a new partnership we are happy to announce today.
