About the Opportunity

ACOR was recently awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Education to digitize and make available to the public a substantial collection of historical photographs of Jordan and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a project archivist with an interest in photographic archives to join us for the Spring 2018 semester (5 months) in a full-time (35 hours per week), paid internship. Round trip international airfare, accommodation (room and half-board at the ACOR facility in Amman), and a stipend of approximately $280 per week are provided to the qualified candidate. The successful candidate must secure their own health and emergency evacuation insurance. Placement date is negotiable, but will preferably be March–July 2018.

This internship is appropriate for advanced students or recent graduates in library and information science, with a preference for those specializing in archives, museums, or cultural resource management.

ACOR anticipates continuing to offer this internship to one archivist per semester for the duration of the project funding, so we are also open to applications for future semesters. This is an excellent opportunity to gain international experience and to travel and live in a safe environment in the Middle East.

About the Work

Working directly with the project coordinator, the Project Archivist will be responsible for the processing (i.e. describing, cataloging, numbering/filing, digitizing, and physical care and maintenance) of the ACOR photographic collections. The Project Archivist will also oversee the work of one or more archival technicians to ensure appropriate photographic digitization standards are met, and consult regularly with project staff for assistance in describing and cataloging archival material.

Key Responsibilities:
• Process and arrange new and existing photo collections according to established project guidelines to prepare them for digitization.
• Weed and curate photographic collections according to established project guidelines.
• Scan, upload, and process images with appropriate metadata in ACOR’s digital collection management system (Starchive by Digital ReLabs). Monitor digitized items for quality control and adherence to digitization standards.
• Administrate Starchive collection management platform, adding new data fields and platform features as necessary, monitoring newly entered data for consistency, and acting as liaison with Digital ReLabs for resolving technical issues with the platform.
• Maintain order and arrangement of the physical collections, ensuring they are properly stored in archival-safe storage boxes, folders, etc. Monitor the condition of the photo archives collections and make recommendations for their preservation.
• Maintain and update the archive’s Instagram feed and contribute photos from the archive to ACOR’s Facebook and other social media sites.
• Each Project Archivist will select one of ACOR’s smaller collections to digitize, process, and research for the creation of a digital photo exhibit.
• Work with ACOR staff members in identifying archival materials for use in public exhibitions, lectures, presentations, and other programs.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field
• A recent or current graduate student in Library and Information Science, Archives and Records Management, Digital Humanities, Public History or another related degree program
• Coursework in metadata standards, archives and records management, digital curation, digital preservation, and/or digital libraries
• Working knowledge of archival standards and practices, including metadata and digital imaging standards
• Working knowledge of proper care and handling of photos, slides, negatives, and other paper-based materials

Desired Skills
• High level of computer/technical skills, including MS office (particularly Excel), working with collaborative/shared document environments like Google Docs, digital photography apps (Adobe Photoshop and/or Lightroom), and a basic understanding of database administration
• Self-directed and independent, with the ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual team environment (English is the primary language at ACOR).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Excellent organizational skills with a high attention to detail
• Knowledge of the geography and history of Jordan and the Middle East is helpful but not required
• Knowledge of Arabic language helpful but not required

Sarah P’s comments: A follower and librarian at Zayed wrote to tell me this position is open. It was last listed in 2016 however now the title ‘Outreach Focus’ has been added so it might be a new position. Zayed University has been considered one of the better colleges to work for in the UAE however in recent years their reputation has slipped a bit. They have always had sporadic hiring practices; interviewing then no communication, it appearing that a job is likely and then no contract, etc.

Dubai is a new, crazy city with lots of traffic but it is interesting and the Emirates remain a safe to live.  Be prepared for more expats than Arab nationals and watch the low oil prices because this is affecting the economy.

Sarah P’ s comments: A late posting via TIE but also listed on their website. No reviews on ISR, one on Glassdoor which gave the school 2 stars, and the following short article on Teach Abroad which shared facilities and salary information. I wouldn’t worry about the qualifications in that they are requesting an education major.  A master’s degree in library science is the qualification along with the school media certification.  However, at this late date if you do not have the certification but can at least show you are working toward it, then I believe you will be accepted.  The other acceptable route is to have an education certification with school media certification in addition with no MLIS.

(I personally don’t like this as how can anyone learn to be an effective librarian by taking only six classes?  Who cares how wonderful your classes are if you can’t manage the database well enough to check out books? Just saying…)

The successful candidate provides expertise and leadership to create a program of specialized research assistance for the current and evolving geospatial research needs at NYUAD. This person will be instrumental in planning and developing library services related to locating, acquiring, managing and analyzing geospatial data across disciplines. The position involves significant collaborative work with library colleagues at NYUAD and NYU in New York, as well as with faculty and students, and therefore requires excellent communication skills and the ability to foster successful working relationships both on site and remotely. The position contributes to the provision of information and research assistance to the gifted faculty, post-doctoral researchers, visiting scholars and student body of NYU Abu Dhabi, often called the “world’s honors college.”

As part of a highly collaborative team, this position plays a key role in the educational mission of NYUAD by establishing strong relationships with faculty and students, and connecting them to the resources, technologies and tools that meet their research, teaching and learning needs. This position works in the Library’s Center for Digital Scholarship (CDS) and will be an integral member of the CDS team  in developing programming and outreach initiatives across campus as they relate to digital scholarship, geospatial analysis, data services and more. Reporting to the Head of the CDS, this position may also partner on long-term research projects, collaborating with colleagues within the library and across the university, including those in archives and special collections, digital humanities and social sciences.

A commitment to outreach and service to researchers will be essential to this work. The incumbent will be expected to teach workshops on geospatial data topics, including data access and data literacy, as well as on specific programs such as ArcGIS, Carto, QGIS and other tools. This person will work in collaboration with liaison librarians on subject specific geospatial queries, including citation methods and visualization tools. He/she will provide course-integrated instruction upon request in assigned liaison areas and other areas making use of geospatial resources. This person will facilitate access to NYU’s Spatial Data Repository and guide patrons in its use. The incumbent will also be responsible for developing an approach to locating regional data resources and establishing protocols for their translation from English into Arabic. Some facility in working with quantitative data and statistical analysis may also be a requirement of the incumbent. This job could be a potential position for someone looking to gain both international and school library experience as Shannon says they are willing to take someone without school certification (something you could be working on while in the position). It is also a rare advantage (in my opinion) to have a HS Principal who has an MLS. Sarah P’s comments: With the fall in the price of oil, there have been, naturally, far fewer positions listed in the Middle East.  QNL has in the past always posted numerous positions and has even hosted a job fair in Europe a few years back. There are still many positions listed on their website but this particular one has been posted on ALAjobs which perhaps means they are highlighting this job as necessary.

Concerning QNL,  I have received some private comments noting that:

  • salaries are typically lower than average
  • high job turnover (might be related to salary issue)
  • make sure to apply directly to QNL rather than through a headhunter
  • be aware of  ‘Qatarization‘, a policy whereby all jobs are supposed to re eventually filled by nationals

As for working in Qatar, my comments from earlier posts are that it is a relatively safe and progressive Middle Eastern country.  Negatives are that the cost of living is rising, you must go outside the city for any true cultural experiences, and that lately, the country has tended toward becoming more conservative meaning fewer liquor licenses and more segregation of men and women, etc.  Yes, Qatar is modern but you still need to be willing to accept and respect the religious and social customs of a Muslim country.

Sarah P’s comments:  Cairo is a vibrant, crazy, old yet new city.  American Universities do tend to be more established and reputable than some of the new start-up campuses. For new librarians, they do state that they are open for applications from ‘early career applicants’ with relevant experience. However, I would do some careful research as Egypt is in a particularly vulnerable position at the moment. Many long-term expat residents have left and AUC currently has 105 positions listed which is a sobering number.

The Libraries and Learning Technologies invite applications for a fixed term contract (two years renewable) position at the Instructor level beginning in Fall 2017.
