Job: Secondary School Librarian

5.30.17 –  Secondary School Librarian
American United School of Kuwait, Sabah Al Salem, Kuwait

Sarah P’ s comments: A late posting via TIE but also listed on their website. No reviews on ISR, one on Glassdoor which gave the school 2 stars, and the following short article on Teach Abroad which shared facilities and salary information. I wouldn’t worry about the qualifications in that they are requesting an education major.  A master’s degree in library science is the qualification along with the school media certification.  However, at this late date if you do not have the certification but can at least show you are working toward it, then I believe you will be accepted.  The other acceptable route is to have an education certification with school media certification in addition with no MLIS.

(I personally don’t like this as how can anyone learn to be an effective librarian by taking only six classes?  Who cares how wonderful your classes are if you can’t manage the database well enough to check out books? Just saying…)

The school provides a 1:1 tablet program, with a high speed Wi-Fi network that allows educators and students to take advantage of this pedagogical change in the way that information is provided in a school setting.

Job: K-12 Librarian

4.4.17 –  K-12 Librarian
American Academy for Girls, Kuwait City, Kuwait

Sarah P’s comments:  As you can see, I was asked to post this position.  I am usually very willing to do this when someone personally writes because it usually indicates that the institution is sincerely looking to fill the position with a qualified candidate. This job could be a potential position for someone looking to gain both international and school library experience as Shannon says they are willing to take someone without school certification (something you could be working on while in the position). It is also a rare advantage (in my opinion) to have a HS Principal who has an MLS. As always, please read the reviews carefully and think about whether the school and the location would be a good fit. I worked in the Middle East for many years (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE & Oman) and enjoyed it however the experience is not for everyone.

Dear Sarah,
I am a fan of your blog, and ask if you would be so kind as to post our current opening for a librarian.  This is a great opportunity for someone who may just be starting out and needs to work and save their income to perhaps pay off student loan debt and gain international librarian school experience.  It isn’t necessary that she be a certified school library media specialist, a Bachelors in Library & Information Science will do.  Our school is relatively small, all girls and has an easy going atmosphere.  Thank you, I appreciate it.  Shannon Rooney, MLS (Kent State University, 2005)

Job: School Librarian: immediate opening

9/21/15 – School Librarian: immediate opening
International Creativity Academy, Kuwait City, Kuwait

Sarah P’s comments: ISS (International School Services), one of the largest recruitment agencies, just sent out the announcement listed below.  I share this posting with reservations.  If you need an immediate job, want to get your foot in the door of international work but lack either school media certification and/or experience then carefully read the reviews (International School Reviews) and if you know what you are taking on, then go for it.  You need to be prepared to keep your head down and do the job and then you can move on after two years. FYI: normally ISS expects you to join their agency however in this case they are saying you can send a letter of inquiry directly to the school.
