Job: Academic Librarian, Library and Learning Commons

11/10/14  –   Academic Librarian, Library and Learning Commons
Monash University, Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia

Monash University has a bold vision – to deliver significant improvements to the human condition. Distinguished by its international perspective, Monash takes pride in its commitment to innovate research and high quality teaching and learning.

Our campus at Bandar Sunway in Petaling Jaya strives to be a premier private research-intensive university, contributing to Malaysia and Asia. Due to our rapid growth and expansion, we are seeking suitably qualified individuals to join our dynamic team.

The position provides information services and information literacy programs as part of a team for academic staff and students in the STEM Schools (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine). The position is also member of a team responsible for the provision of information services on a rostered basis at the Library’s Service Point.

Sarah P’s comments:   Monash U. is a branch of  this Australian University with eight campuses: six in Australia, one in Malaysia, one in South Africa, and a centre in Prato, Italy.  I have only rarely seen a job listed in Malaysia and never one from this University.  I would assume they have previously hired Australians to fill the position but as they have posted this position on IFLAjobs it would appear they are open to accepting applications from other nationalities.

Job: Reference & Research Services Librarian

9/24/14 – Reference & Research Services Librarian (New Position)
New York University (NYU), Shanghai, China

NYU Shanghai is the newest degree-granting campus within the NYU Global Network University. It is the first Sino-US higher education joint venture to grant a degree that is accredited in the US as well as in China.

The Reference and Research Services librarian serves as the primary liaison to a group of academic departments in the humanities or social sciences, with responsibilities for delivering a program of instruction, consultation, and research support services; developing responsive outreach and other information services; building collections in all formats that support research and curricular needs; and taking a leadership role on projects and initiatives as appropriate.   Collaborative work with colleagues at NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi, and across NYU’s global network is an important job expectation.  Librarians at NYU participate in library and system-wide committees, and professional activities outside of the university.

Sarah P’s comments:  NYU continues to expand despite criticism and some false starts (their Singapore campus has closed: see Anatomy of a Failed Campus for more info).  However no new venture is without risk and they appear to be forging ahead.  This could be a position where you could really help chart the future of the library however make sure to ask what your relationship is to NYU New York.  In the past they have stressed that you are not part of the regular faculty – meaning you cannot transfer campuses.

The Reference Librarian position is listed under ‘staff’ openings rather than faculty.
