Sarah P’s comments:  I have watched the development of Doha’s Education City since its inception in 2002.  Jobs regularly appear and are filled but the process is vague and the length of time to hire very slow.  Salaries are good and Doha is safe but recently has been trending toward becoming conservative. If interested in this region, I would keep a close eye on oil prices and how they are affecting job stability.

FYI: Northwestern listed one position in 2015 and two positions in 2014 (Public Services and Technical Services). This position shows a listing date of 2/23 however they have only just posted this on IFLAjobs.


Job summary

The Library Director of Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) is responsible for the overall management and administration of the NU-Q Library; establishing the vision, goals, objectives, policies and procedures and allocating resources within the Library. The director reports to the Chief Operations Officer and has a dotted line reporting relation to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. The Director works closely with NU-Q leadership to review the general state of NU-Q’s operations and to analyze and respond to issues which may affect NU-Q’s ability to achieve its objectives. The Director works with various members of the University Libraries’ team in Evanston.

The NU-Q Library is a user-focused library and part of Northwestern University in Qatar in Education City in Doha, Qatar. The Library serves the research and educational needs of Northwestern faculty, staff and students. The growing collection is made up of print, DVD/Blu-ray, and electronic resources purchased and provided to support the curricular needs of communication, journalism, and liberal arts. In addition, the library collects some recreational information resources for use by the community.

Principal accountabilities

  • Planning and implementing library programs including research assistance, document delivery,  collection development and management, and outreach to the NU community to enable effective use of library and information services and resources; Assessing various aspects of the library including its collections, services, use patterns, and staffing in order to support decision making and priority setting;
  • Directing and participating in daily library operations and services; providing high-quality, timely, and innovative research and information services;
  • Facilitating access to library services and resources provided by home campus or the Qatar National Library as appropriate; Help plan, develop, and implement new technologies to support access to library services and resources including those through the Canvas course management system and the Alma library services platform;
  • Developing innovative and creative ways to bring services to users and to expand on traditional means of delivering library services, user education, and faculty support; Serve as collection and service liaison to the communication and journalism programs;
  • Recruiting, training, and building a solid, skilled, service-oriented team of librarians and non-librarians;
  • Maintaining constant and close communication, coordination, and cooperation with the University Library, Northwestern University in Qatar administrative units, and other Education City libraries;
  • Supervising document delivery and inter library lending and borrowing; Coordinating the provision of technical services and collection development activities and serving as liaison to at least one academic program;
  • Representing NU-Q at conferences, meetings, and other professional development venues;
  • Performing other related duties as required or assigned, including but not limited to
  • Participating on committees and task forces of NU-Q, Northwestern University, and University Libraries.

Required qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in library/information science accredited by an internationally-recognized library association (e.g. ALA, ALIA) or the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible supervision and leadership in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated awareness and understanding of current trends in academic and research libraries and higher education. Commitment to improving library services.
  • Working knowledge of current and emerging technology developments and applications to enhance user services and programs;
  • Ability to effectively communicate library issues and local needs to administrators, patrons, and members of the home campus library staff.
  • Evidence of successful leadership abilities, excellent communication and presentation skills in English, and effective interpersonal skills with the demonstrated ability to build consensus.

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and innovative in terms of library services and outreach to the campus community. Experience in a branch campus library environment. Experience in the Middle East or Arabian Gulf.
  • Ability or experience working with a culturally diverse population in an international setting.
