3.24.16 –  Foreign Service Information Management Specialist
US Foreign Service, Worldwide

Sarah P’s comments:  For US librarians with IT skills and/or a degree this position could be a good entrance into the foreign service.  Librarians are generally hired as Information Resource Officers but there are only about 30 of those positions worldwide whereas there are IT management positions everywhere thus both the chance of being hired and the upward mobility is better.  (For example, this position was posted twice last year whereas the Info Resource Officer was last posted in 2012).  For more information see Chapter 6 in my book and/or the Book Resources section of the blog.

Question: Does anyone have any information about The British School in Kiev?

3.19.16 –  Does anyone have any information or know anyone at The British School in Kiev (BISU)?

There is a librarian position open at this school but the general (ISR) reviews are not good. If you, or anyone you know has any knowledge of this school, comments would be greatly appreciated.  You may publicly comment or privately send me an e-mail.  Part of the reason for this blog is to help us all make positive career choices and help each other out!

Thank you, Sarah P.

Sarah P’s comments:  This advert comes from TIE (The International Educator) and you should pay for a subscription is you are interested in applying as the job is not posted on the school’s website.  This is late in the season to be posting a position, particularly for a Head Librarian.  I would also recommend joining ISR (International School Reviews) and, if you do apply, ask about local safety and percentage of international vs. local students.

Job: Deputy University Librarian

3.18.16 – Deputy University Librarian
Fiji National University, Nasinu, Fiji

Sarah P’s comments:  I suspect this is a new position as this university was only created in 2010.  On their website they list this position as ‘re-advertised’ so perhaps, as often happens, they were advertising locally first.  Given the high level of education and skills they are requiring I am not surprised they did not yet locate a viable candidate. FYI: The other contender in the region and the usual source for jobs is the well-established, British-based University of the South Pacific located in Suva, Fiji.
